Supporting Your Pet Through Stress, Anxiety, and Fear

The world can be overwhelming for our pets, and sometimes they need a little extra help to feel secure. Managing stress and anxiety in dogs and cats is vital for their overall health and happiness.

Various factors can trigger anxiety in pets, including loud noises, unfamiliar faces, changes in routine, or visits to the vet. Each pet responds differently—dogs may show subtle signs like lip licking or yawning, which can escalate to more obvious behaviors like attempting to escape. Cats might hide, over-groom, or exhibit destructive behaviors such as scratching furniture.

It's important to know that your pet doesn’t have to endure these feelings alone. There are many ways to support them, and early intervention is key. If you notice signs of anxiety in your pet, please reach out to us. The sooner we can address their needs, the better they will feel.

For some pets, anxiety may persist despite initial efforts. In such cases, your veterinarian may recommend prescription anti-anxiety medications. Pheromones, like Feliway for cats and Adaptil for dogs, are another helpful option. These products mimic natural comforting scents, helping pets feel more secure.

Body wraps, like the Thundershirt, can also provide relief by applying gentle pressure, similar to swaddling a baby. This technique can be effective in a variety of situations, from noise phobias to travel-related anxiety.

Establishing a consistent routine can further reduce stress. Regular meal times, walks, and rest periods help pets know what to expect, creating a sense of stability. For unexpected events, having a plan in place—such as crate training—can offer a safe retreat for your pet during unsettling moments.

Fear/anxiety is often the underlying reason for many dog or cat behavior problems. You may need to have your pet examined to be sure there's no physical cause for your pet's stress. Remember, you don’t have to navigate this alone. We’re here to help ensure your pet feels safe, secure, and loved.
